UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELESRe-Application Program (UCLA RAP) Description: The program is designed for disadvantaged students that have applied and not gained admission to any U.S. Medical School. The program features MCAT preparation, and seminars and workshops on various topics such as: study skills; reviews of biology, chemistry and physics; self-development; re-application and interview skills. Students, in close consultation with program advisors, will take courses through UCLA Extension or a local California State University. Eligibility: Candidates must have been previously unsuccessful in gaining admission to any United States medical school, be considered disadvantaged or from an underserved community, have completed an undergraduate degree or higher from an accredited United States college or university, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, have a minimum GPA of 2.7, and have a minimum combined MCAT score of 15. Preference will be granted to legal residents of California. Duration: Eleven months, beginning with an intensive eight-week summer session, followed by an academic-year program. Finances: There is no tuition or enrollment fee for participation in the program, however students are expected to meet the responsibility of their own living expenses, for both sessions of the program, in addition to any tuition and/or fees for courses during the academic-year session. The eight-week summer session requires a commitment of 6 days and some evening participation each week,therefore, students will not be able to hold part-time employment during that period. Participants will receive financial assistance of $1,500 for the summer During the nine-month academic year component a modest stipend of at least $300 per month will be provided to assist with educational expenses (tuition, books etc.) and students would be able to hold part-time employment if desired. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) Description: The goal of UCLA PREP is to prepare a small cohort of baccalaureate recipients for successful entry into and completion of a graduate program in the biomedical sciences. Scholars will devote 75% of their time performing research with an experienced faculty mentor and the remainder to appropriate coursework, workshops, seminars, journal club, etc. The specific objectives are: (1) to heighten scholars’ interest in a career in biomedical research; (2) to ensure scholars’ academic preparation for entry and success in graduate school; (3) to enhance scholars’ performance on standardized tests (GRE); (4) to enhance scholars’ academic skills essential for success in graduate programs; and (5) to develop scholars’ research skills necessary for success in graduate school and a research career. Each PREP Scholar will develop an academic and research plan to prepare them for admission and success in an appropriate graduate program in consultation with their faculty research mentor and the PREP Program Director. Eligibility: To be eligible for participation in the program as a PREP scholar, individuals from underrepresented minority groups must have graduated with a baccalaureate degree in a biomedically relevant science from an accredited U.S. college or university no more than 36 months prior to applying to PREP. All individuals selected as scholars must intend to apply, within two years, for graduate education that will eventually lead to the research doctorate. In addition, PREP scholars must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The aim is to select individuals who are interested in pursuing graduate education but might not be competitive for admission without further mentored preparation and assistance. Examples include students whose undergraduate experience did not provide a broad exposure to the biomedical sciences or significant opportunities to engage in undergraduate research. Finances:Scholars will be compensated at a level of $21,000 per year. All educational costs, including tuition for appropriate coursework, will be covered by the program. Application Deadline: The deadline for receipt of all application materials and supporting documents is Monday, March 5, 2007. Some applicants may be invited to an interview in March.
