Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP)
(6 weeks)

The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is a free six week summer academic enrichment program for freshman and sophomore college students who are interested in a career in medicine or dentistry. The program is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with direction and technical assistance provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Dental Education Association.

Eligibility: To be eligible for SMDEP, an applicant must be a college freshman or sophomore; have an overall GPA of 3.00 (with 2.75 in the sciences), or equivalent academic credentials; and be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa.

Eligibility: The program gives preference to minority, disadvantaged and nontraditional students, but all students who have the interest and potential to become medical doctors are encouraged to apply. All applicants must have satisfactorily completed the following introductory level college courses: biology, chemistry and physics. Official Transcript of SAT/ACT or MCAT (if taken) scores. Although out-of-state applicants are considered, preference is given to North Carolina residents.

Features/Benefits: Participants get a taste of the pedagogical style and demands of the medical school curriculum through the efforts of medical school faculty and their direct, consistent involvement in the instruction of several modules. The program is tuition free and stipends will be paid to all eligible students.

Arrangements to live in university housing facilities are made; however, students are responsible for all room, board and living expenses. Out-of-town participants are reimbursed for mileage incurred at the onset and conclusion of the program.

Description: The Focus of the program is on research training in the cardiovascular sciences with medical school faculty. The curriculum includes “hands-on” laboratory research, a lecture series, which features presentation by faculty and guest speakers, and a research symposium at which the students present their research findings. Undergraduate or master's students with an interest in a biomedical research career are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility: Must be underrepresented minorities, U.S. citizens or permanent resident of the United States, undergraduate students in good academic stading.

Features/Benefits: Program participants will receive a stipend, room in one of the WFU residence halls, and transportaion costs. The fellowship program is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
