The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is a free six week summer academic enrichment program for freshman and sophomore college students who are interested in a career in medicine or dentistry. The program is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with direction and technical assistance provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Dental Education Association.

Eligibility: To be eligible for SMDEP, an applicant must be a college freshman or sophomore; have an overall GPA of 3.00 (with 2.75 in the sciences), or equivalent academic credentials; and be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants who graduate before or during the program will not be eligible. No previous research experience is required, except of current freshmen.

Features/Benefits: The Program offers student-mentor pairing with Baylor scientists from basic science and clinical research departments, specially designed seminar programs, career counseling, GRE prep course, and social and cultural activities. A $4000 salary (before taxes) is provided for participants. Dormitory housing, at a reasonable cost, is located adjacent to the Baylor complex.

Eligibility: U.S. citizen or permanent resident; have a good overall GPA; have completed at least four semesters of undergraduate coursework (55-60 hours). Eligibility may require disadvantaged status.

Features/Benefits: Participants will be offered an intensive academic program of study to reinforce knowledge of the sciences and to enhance the skills of reading, writing, and studying. They will refine test-taking skills in preparation for the MCAT. Clinical experiences will be provided, as well as mock interviews and workshops. Housing and meals are provided on the University's campus.

Features/Benefits: The program provides an opportunity for students, who think they are interested in biomedical research, the opportunity to obtain first-hand experience in the research laboratory and to interact with the graduate students and faculty. The program is accompanied by a weekly seminar series, and undergraduate course credit may be arranged. A $3000 stipend is provided. Participants must make their own travel arrangements. Students are responsible for arranging their own housing. Assistance in finding off campus housing is available.

Eligibility: Students enrolled in any accredited U.S. college or university during 2000, must be a least a sophomore at the time of application, overall GPA 3.0 and completed at least 12 hours in a science discipline. Foreign students enrolled at a U.S. university/college are eligible to apply to this program. See the web site for requirements.

Features/Benefits: Students will gain hands-on experience in the areas of biomedical research under the supervision of faculty sponsors of their choice from the medical, dental, nursing, and public health schools. There is a $2500 stipend. Housing, at a reasonable cost, is located next to the UTTHSC-H Medical and Dental Schools.

Objective: To provide an intensive research training experience that leads to an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in the pursuit of basic answers to current questions in the biological sciences. Fellows will pursue individual research projects under the direction of a member of the graduate school faculty. Lectures and seminars by faculty members will supplement the research experience.

Eligibility:
Applicants must be enrolled in a naturan science degree program at the undergraduate level and have completed the sophomore year. Selection criteria include grades, experience, and letters of recommendation

Finances:
Fellowships are awarded coming with $3,500 (or $4750 if housing is required) for the 10 week duration of the program.
