Extra-Curricular Activities

Currently "hot" words on medical school applications are extracurricular activities, especially community service. HPAP students are aware of this because the most frequently asked question in the office is "How do I get involved in extracurricular activities, community service and/or research?"

Syracuse University Internship Program (SUIP)
Organizes information on local and national internships in a wide variety of fields.113 Euclid Avenue.

Center For Public and Community Service (CPCS)

Offers placement information and listings of voulnteer opportunites in many areas. 237 Schine Student Center

Students Offering Services (SOS) plans, coordinates and implements projects that make a difference in the Syracuse Community. SOS is not religiously affiliated. Noble Room, Hendricks Chapel.

Division of International Programs Abroad (DIPA) provides opportunities for study and internships in several foreign countries. Opportunities exist to study abroad for a year, a semester, or for a summer. 106 Walnut Place

Center for Career Services (CCS)) offers help in a number of ways. Among the services are workshops in resume writing, interview techniques, and networking. You will need to do these things so why not learn to do them properly. Also, if you change your mind about your career, CCS can facilitate your search for employment. 235 Schine Student Center.

Nearby hospital volunteer offices are great places to learn what it's like to work in health care. Students interested in seriously committing their time(commitment of a certain number of hours will be required) should contact CPCS or SUIP.

Keep up with a hobby If you enjoy sports, get involved in intramural, club or varsity teams as your schedule permits. If you enjoy music or play an instrument, join one of the many groups on campus.

Read for pleasure and to improve your skills.

Remember, whatever extracurricular activity you choose to undertake, you cannot jeopardize your academic standing. Do not get involved to impress others. Experience what interests and excites you. It is from these experiences that you will come away with many valuable lessons, memories, good personal statements and letters of evaluation.
