Welcome to all incoming first-year and transfer students!
Welcome Back to all our returning pre-health students!
To enhance our advising services for students who wish to pursue professional health and legal career tracks, advising services for these specialties have been brought together under a new umbrella of Pre-Professional Advising Services sponsored by the Student Services Division and The College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University. Barbara Carns remains our invaluable HPAP office coordinator. This past August, we welcomed Stacy Claire Peffley as our new pre-health counselor and Julian White, a new pre-health graduate assistant. We are also joined by Eric Coellen, a pre-health graduate advisor who is returning for his second year with HPAP. Our director of Pre-Professional Advising Services is M. Kristine Waldron.
HPAP has a number of events planned which we hope you will find both informative and useful. Please refer to the listing below and mark your calendars in advance.

The Emerging Leaders Program
Is designed to recruit high-potential employees for future leadership roles. To ensure that each intern acquires the competencies to become a successful leader, the training curriculum has been developed around the federal Executive Core Qualifications and the DHHS Leadership Competencies. This fantastic opportunity will include exposure to a number of Federal Programs that HHS oversees, and an opportunity to work on issues that are on the fore front of our nations needs. This two-year program is designed for Masters level graduates (alumni or current students) who are eager to make a contribution to the Department. Undergraduate students can apply with 1-2 years of work experience that is directly related to the career track they are applying to. The majority of applicants that apply (95%) have a graduate degree or higher.
This challenging 24-month program provides training in departmental core competencies, multiple job rotations to gain familiarity with people and programs across HHS, assignment of mentors to provide career development advice and support, and training in specific technical competencies based on your chosen career path. This training is then expanded into a full-time opportunity into one of the 5 career paths you have originally chosen: scientific, public health, information technology, social science and administrative.
Although we are unable to attend all of the wonderful institutions of higher learning as we would like, I want to ensure that your students and alumni are aware of our exciting program opportunity. If you have any question you can direct those to me, my contact information is below. Please visit our ELP website http://hhsu.learning.hhs.gov/elp

* FYI *
The Rebecca Lee Pre-Health Society
The Rebecca Lee Pre-Health Society is a student organization designed to promote and encourage a diverse group of pre-health students to attend professional health schools, including medical, dental, vet, optometry, physical therapy, and other health careers. This organization is open to any Syracuse University student who has an interest in a health profession as a career goal, regardless of that student's current major.
One reason students should join this organization is because it is a branch of the Students National Medical Association (SNMA), and as such, often collaborates on events and programs with Upstate Medical University College of Medicine. Other reasons to join the Rebecca Lee Pre-Health Society include networking opportunities, community service projects, mentoring from medical students, the availability of MCAT/GRE preparation workshops, and, most importantly, the advice and support of fellow Rebecca Lee members. The society also brings in speakers from various health professions to address the group.
The society is named for Rebecca Lee Crumpler, who was the first African American woman to earn an M.D. degree, graduating from the New England Female Medical College in 1864. The society was originally created for undergraduates from under-represented minority groups who were interested in pursuing health-related careers. Since its earliest days its membership has grown to include students from all backgrounds who have an interest in the heath care field.
